Organic Standards
A handy official summary of what being certified organic is all about, taken verbatim from the back of our organic certificate:
Essential Elements of Organic Certification Standard
The essential elements of the OC/PRO International Organic Standards and the National Standard of Canada for organic processors are as follows:
- Pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides and genetically modified organisms (GMO's), or products derived thereof are prohibited from use.
- The processor must maintain and update an Organic Processing and Handling Plan.
- The processor must maintain a listing of all raw materials and other ingredients used in the processing, handling and storage of organic produce.
- All raw materials processed by a wholly organic plant or processed during an organic interval in a multiple use plant must be assessed by OCPP Ontario Inc., in the context of necessity and intended use.
- The producer has adopted soil and crop management practices which minimize soil degradation and which can be sustained on an ongoing basis, the processor has functional recycling/waste management programs.
- Organic commodities must not be contaminated at any point during interim storage and transportation including residues from previous cargo(es).
- Produce storage facilities must be maintained and cleaned on a regular basis and must be free of pesticides. Storage buildings and bins must be identified with permanent numbers or letters.
- All organic products must be physically separated from non-organic products in such a way that co-mingling cannot occur.
- The processor must monitor soil and/or water quality on a periodic basis and in a manner appropriate for their processing.
- The processor must maintain detailed records from raw materials to finished products and production disposition with appropriate lot identification.

CSA Update |
|
It's 2008 and the new farming year is underway! Sign-ups for 2008 are way ahead of any previous year, with both renewals and new members already in. Share prices have been increased for this season (the first increase since we began four years ago). The season will once again be 18 weeks, beginning around mid-June. This year, you're also encourage to visit the farm at least once, and a new farmwork program is being considered, where you can do some veggie gardening here in the field, in 4-hour blocks, when it's convenient to you. If you're interested in CSA with us for 2008, here are the details for our farm, and the new 2008 printable sign-up form (or email or call for one to be mailed!). And there's more CSA info in the FAQs.
