Mondo Monsanto: World of GE Food Print E-mail
Tue, 24 Feb 2004
We hear a lot about big agribusiness corporations, like Monsanto, the world leader in genetically engineered seed, and the bad things they do on a global scale. A newly published corporate profile, Monsanto: Behind the Scenes, sums up this decades-old company, from PCB-dumping days, through Agent Orange, Roundup herbicide, and the details of its present genetic engineering business. The paper is intended as "a useful action tool for grassroots activists", so any positive spin is stripped out. Pretty much just the fairly startling facts in concentrated form.

Organic Labelling Loophole Print E-mail
Thu, 19 Feb 2004
By manipulating organic definitions, a US company has managed to get plain tap water certified organic, and is selling it for use as the main ingredient in organic foods and body care products. The "organic water" is marketed as a line of plant extracts. By using it as the water in water-based products - beverages, soups, shampoos - companies can meet the minimum 70% organic ingredients required by US law to label a product "made with organic ingredients". The charge is contained in a complaint against Bayliss Ranch and its certifier, Quality Assurance International (QAI, the world's largest organic certifier; Loblaw's PC Organics uses the QAI mark), filed Feb 18-2004 with the US Dept. of Agriculture, by the Organic Consumers Association, and over 300 organics companies.

Fresh+Local+Organic! Print E-mail
Mon, 12 Jan 2004
For the tastiest, healthiest food available, try your best to buy Fresh, Local, and Organic! Ideally, for fruits and veggies, fresh means harvested with care right when ready to eat and sold within hours; local is grown within miles of where you live; and organic means raised without artificial chemicals or genetically modified seed, in a farming system that takes care of the soil and water, and maintains biodiversity (lots of different plants, insects, and other living things working together).

Eat more veggies to prevent cancer! Print E-mail
Mon, 29 Dec 2003
Up to 30% of cancer in Ontario could be prevented by eating more veggies, according to a new study released by Cancer Care Ontario. For cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, pancreas, larynx, lungs and bladder, there is "convincing or probable evidence for prevention by vegetable and fruit consumption." Five or more servings of fruit and vegetables daily is recommended, while 40% of Ontario adults fail to make the minimum. Indeed, it's hard to keep one's head above all the conflicting studies and "scientific" opinions out there,  but this one seemed too significant and close to home not to note! Read more

With 140+ stores and 26,000 employees, Whole Foods Market this summer became the first national grocery chain in the US to be Certified Organic. WFM was launched in 1980 with a single supermarket-style natural foods store in Austin, Texas. Now, outlets are sprinkled across the States, and there's even a Canadian outpost, located in Toronto. Stock is traded publicly on NASDAQ (WFMI).

Fresh food's come a long way! Print E-mail
Sun, 19 Oct 2003
UK newspaper the Guardian last month purchased 20 fresh food items from major British supermarkets - fruit and vegtables, meat, fish, poultry, wine - and tracked down how far each had travelled. The combined total: 100,943 miles. Their interactive report, How far has your food travelled?, comments on each item's journey.

CSA Update

It's 2008 and the new farming year is underway! Sign-ups for 2008 are way ahead of any previous year, with both renewals and new members already in. Share prices have been increased for this season (the first increase since we began four years ago). The season will once again be 18 weeks, beginning around mid-June. This year, you're also encourage to visit the farm at least once, and a new farmwork program is being considered, where you can do some veggie gardening here in the field, in 4-hour blocks, when it's convenient to you. If you're interested in CSA with us for 2008, here are the details for our farm, and the new 2008 printable sign-up form (or email or call for one to be mailed!). And there's more CSA info in the FAQs.
