Hard to believe our first cerified organic year's already winding down!!
Whatever this Ontario winter brings, the short days and long, dark nights are
sure to fly by as we gear up, planning and preplanting, for 2004. It's early
days...

Finally, we were hit by frost, and a -1C low, overnight on Thursday, Oct 2. Some crops were under row covers, but the tomatoes are toast, and overall production is much reduced. The season winds down...! |

The last Saturday in October was our final day at Lindsay Farmers' Market, as
it closed for the winter (opening again first Sat in May!). Our on-farm stand is
also mainly closed (a few fans of hardy greens drop in, "by appointment", to get
what's left!). Cabbage, kale, spinach, and mesclun (under cover) are hanging in
and doing well, and carrots are still in the ground. There's also a fair bit of
clean-up fieldwork left, for days when it's dry and not absolutely freezing.
Next year, we'll keep the greenery going with a full complement of late season
crops! Here's our daily view right about now...

Mild flurries and a dusting of snow over the last two weeks, but the couple
of inches overnight last night was the first snow to stick around. So, we'll
call it the first real snowfall of the season!

For the tastiest, healthiest food available, try your best to buy Fresh, Local, and Organic! Ideally, for fruits and veggies, fresh means harvested with care right when ready to eat and sold within hours; local is grown within miles of where you live; and organic means raised without artificial chemicals or genetically modified seed, in a farming system that takes care of the soil and water, and maintains biodiversity (lots of different plants, insects, and other living things working together). |

Oh, well, looks like for this year, winter's here! Even if a last warm spell melts off the many inches of recent snow, the ground will be too wet to work, or frozen solid. So, the Horse (walking rototiller) is parked away, and the wooden-handled garden tools are ready for their winter linseed oil rubdown. It's about time to turn indoors. In the seedling room, there are walls to paint, grow-racks to arrange, trays to sterilize, seeds to inventory and order, and then it'll be time to start the spring transplants! |

The 2004 catalogs are here, arriving in ones and twos every other day now. We're on over a dozen mailing lists, mostly for seeds and garden tools, some for more unusual products. A new one this year is the color 60-pager from Natural Insect Control (NIC), the "Alternative to Chemicals". It describes and prices mainly beneficial bugs, like Stethorus punctillum, the "Spider Mite Destroyer", a black beetle that's "very effective" on cucumbers and peppers, at $60 for a 100. Of course, the seed catalogs are the highlights! Checking out what's new in certified organic seed is a big deal right now, since the choice is still limited. Then there's the new untreated stuff, because it's untreated or nothing if you can't find certified seed. The rest is more planning and daydreaming about future crops and experiments as you flip through the pages. While winter's around, the catalogs are the next best thing to being out in the field. |

Strange weather for the holidays. Hardly a patch of snow to be found, I was out strolling in the fields today in just a heavy sweatshirt, and the garden beds are thawing! |

CSA Update |
|
It's 2008 and the new farming year is underway! Sign-ups for 2008 are way ahead of any previous year, with both renewals and new members already in. Share prices have been increased for this season (the first increase since we began four years ago). The season will once again be 18 weeks, beginning around mid-June. This year, you're also encourage to visit the farm at least once, and a new farmwork program is being considered, where you can do some veggie gardening here in the field, in 4-hour blocks, when it's convenient to you. If you're interested in CSA with us for 2008, here are the details for our farm, and the new 2008 printable sign-up form (or email or call for one to be mailed!). And there's more CSA info in the FAQs.
