Mesclun!
Mon, 21 Jun 2004
Mesclun has become a fairly common salad item in Canada. Still, many aren't quite clear on what it is! Nothing complicated here: mesclun is simply lettuce and other salad greens, harvested at the baby leaf stage (4"-6") for the lightest, sweetest taste. Mesclun is usually made up of many lettuces - three, four, five or more types. Other leafy greens are added for color, texture, and taste: cress, mizuna, arugula, and so on. The "concept" came from Europe! Mesclun is one of the first harvests in spring, and we grow various mixes all through the season!

CSA Season Starts June 28
Tue, 15 Jun 2004
The first CSA delivery for 2004 is on Monday, June 28! We've changed the date from the June 21 to coincide better with this season's harvest. The first weekly members' newsletter will be going out in a couple of days with all the upcoming delivery details -- of course, updates will be on this site as well!

The fields are alive!
Thu, 03 Jun 2004
The bulk of spring planting is done, although there's not much to see unless you look up close! The weather's been up and down over the last month, with a hot dry spell (32?C high), followed by a fairly torrential drenching, and now, for the last few days, several near zero nights with frost. Half of the tomato transplants are in the field, and have to be covered with every frost warning! From conditions so far, it's hard to guess what this summer will be like - then again, it's always a guess... So far: interesting and overall good!

Drenched!
Tue, 25 May 2004
The heavy rains over the last few days left around 4", enough to "fill up the field" for a bit and then some. Not the best timing, right in the middle of planting and transplanting, and it'll take another day or so to fully dry out. Overall, though, a good thing!

CSA Update
Thu, 27 May 2004
CSA delivery locations for the Toronto area are close to being locked in, and the start day will be decided very soon - looks like the third week of June!

First day at market
Sat, 22 May 2004
Started the year at Lindsay Farmers' Market today, with mesclun, spinach and rhubarb. The Market is still quiet on the veggie front. It was great to see the first, early harvest getting out and about! Next, the Farm stand will be opening soon!

Heavy field days
Thu, 06 May 2004
The busiest three weeks of our season begin! Cold-tolerant crops that can germinate at lower soil temperatures, like peas, spinach, lettuce, and Swiss chard, have been in the ground for a while and are already peeping out, and it's time for second plantings. It's also now warm enough to start seeding the more heat-loving crops, which is basically all of the rest! There's some risk of a nasty cold dip over the next month that could cause problems, but that's farming - and we can always seed again. Towards the end of May, it'll be time to transplant out the sensitive seedlings started indoors in March and April: hundreds of tomato plants, tomatillos, peppers, and eggplant. These have to be hardened off first, gradually exposing them to the harsher outdoor conditions for a few days. Lotsa work around here!

Season in full swing!
Wed, 14 Apr 2004
This year's farming action is fully underway. Seedlings are growing relentlessly - this year, we're starting tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and tomatillos in production quantities, and also trying out leek, ground cherry, and extra early spinach and mesclun. The weather has been rather excellent - warm, with a good mix of sun and rain - and the beds are already being worked up. Early plantings of peas, spinach, Swiss chard, carrots, lettuce and green onions are being direct-seeded now. This is the first season of keeping up with it all on the Web, so I'm figuring out a workable routine for fitting in regular online updates!

Milkhouse Project
Mon, 16 Feb 2004
An important project this year is converting the old milkhouse into a field office and post-harvest preparation area. The milkhouse is a small structure built into a corner of the main barn, used in the Farm's dairy days to collect and store...milk! Since then, it's served as a general wash-up and storage area. The new plan is to turn it into a convenient space for washing veggies and taking care of field business!

CSA Update

It's 2008 and the new farming year is underway! Sign-ups for 2008 are way ahead of any previous year, with both renewals and new members already in. Share prices have been increased for this season (the first increase since we began four years ago). The season will once again be 18 weeks, beginning around mid-June. This year, you're also encourage to visit the farm at least once, and a new farmwork program is being considered, where you can do some veggie gardening here in the field, in 4-hour blocks, when it's convenient to you. If you're interested in CSA with us for 2008, here are the details for our farm, and the new 2008 printable sign-up form (or email or call for one to be mailed!). And there's more CSA info in the FAQs.
