CSA shares start weekend of June 21st!
Fri, 13 Jun 2008
The first share of this year's 18-week CSA will start on the weekend of June 21. Pick-up at Lindsay Farmers' Market is "officially" from 8am-1pm, although the market opens at 7am, so you could get there earlier (the hour gives us time to get set up). The Farm pick-up for now will be on Sunday, and the Bobcaygeon drop day, which this year will be at the new Healthy Herbs Wellness Centre, is still to be determined. More details here and by email...shortly! Thanks!! This should be a delicious, nutritious, exciting and FUN season in fresh local food... Yes, all that!!! :)

Veggies are off and running!
Mon, 19 May 2008

Planting onions

Although you mightn't have been able to tell from just looking here on the site—I've instead been updating the farm blog daily—the new veggie season is off and running! Things are going well. The weather is, of course, as unpredictable as ever. The late end to winter, followed by a couple of weeks of mid-summer heat to end off April, have been followed by our so-far cold and mostly dreary May. This is totally different from the last couple of years, when winter ended early, and heat and no rain covered much of April through June. The downside is that crop growth is noticeably slower without the warmth and sunshine. The upside (and there almost always is one) is that we've had steady amounts of rain in May, which is great for the germinating field crops. Eventually, one thing offsets the other! We started at the Lindsay Farmers' Market on Saturday, May 17 and will be there every market day through October. CSA starts probably third week of June, and the long-promised email newsletter will let you know the details (they'll also be posted here). Overall, things are looking good!

Just around the bend...

Young lettuce

While winter goes about its business outside, a new season of farm-fresh veggies is already getting a headstart indoors. Our first seedlings—lettuce, arugula, parsley, rosemary, leek—are shooting up under lights. Lettuce and arugula will be transplanted out the the greenhouse by early March! To follow all the action daily, year-round, check the farm blog!

CSA: Shares for this season are available now. If you are a 2007 or 2008 member, look out for an email by the end of the month, with a review of last year and an outline of plans for the upcoming season.

Farm work: If you're interested in working on a small-scale, certified organic veggie farm, as a volunteer for a day, or as full-time or part-time job through the season, opportunities are available! Just drop an email or call (ask for MM). No experience necessary, only interest and a love of working outdoors are required.

"Official: organic really is better"
Thu, 29 Nov 2007
This is interesting, if far from surprising: organic food really IS better than conventionally grown food, according to a major new study funded by the European Union. I took the title from the Sunday Times article, which is brief and to-the-point. The first two sentences sum it up: "THE biggest study into organic food has found that it is more nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people's lives. The evidence from the £12m four-year project will end years of debate and is likely to overturn government advice that eating organic food is no more than a lifestyle choice." The article is worth a read...!

Autumn update!
Wed, 07 Nov 2007
Updates on this site over the summer were very few and far between. Instead, daily reports were being posted on the farm blog . Now that the busy growing season is over, there's more time for online things. Look for an all-new Thurston Organic Farm web site over the winter. Meanwhile, the daily updates on TinyFarmBlog continue—the farming never stops!

First salad of the season!

Been munching on greens from the greenhouse for a couple of weeks now, but today was the first dinner salad of the year. It's arugula and four lettuces. Delicious!

Garlic

Garlic is the first to shoot up in this year's garden. The rest of the crops are still seeds in the ground or seedlings in the greenhouse, or are waiting on the weather to get started. Already underway for 2007: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green onion, eggplant, tomato, beets, Swiss chard, peas, mesclun, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, tomatillo, hot and sweet peppers, parsley, dill, sage, thyme, oregano, cilantro, and radish. Nothing like a veggie list!

Tomato seedlings

The unseasonably cold spell is finally easing up, but there's still a chill in the air and snow on the ground. INDOORS, however, it's all green, with the plant racks overflowing with tiny seedlings of all sorts. Over 40 varieties of tomato (mostly unusual and tasty heirlooms), peppers and eggplant, warm weather veggies all, share space with cool season standards like broccoli and cauliflower. Everything is getting a headstart!

Rosemary

Baby rosemary, cloned from cuttings, getting set for the summer herb garden! The fairly severe extended cold spell we're in the midst of now means more work in the seedling room and the greenhouse, watching the temperature, keeping the lights close so plants don't stretch. Rolling with the weather is all part of the fun! Within reason... :)

Fresh lettuce!

The early lettuce is starting to stretch out and sprawl around the trays. It'll be heading out to the greenhouse for transplanting in a few days. Here, Two Stars. Also started: Granada, Sierra, and Simpson Elite. Sampling a couple of the tiny leaves was the first of the season's field tasting for 2007!

CSA Update

It's 2008 and the new farming year is underway! Sign-ups for 2008 are way ahead of any previous year, with both renewals and new members already in. Share prices have been increased for this season (the first increase since we began four years ago). The season will once again be 18 weeks, beginning around mid-June. This year, you're also encourage to visit the farm at least once, and a new farmwork program is being considered, where you can do some veggie gardening here in the field, in 4-hour blocks, when it's convenient to you. If you're interested in CSA with us for 2008, here are the details for our farm, and the new 2008 printable sign-up form (or email or call for one to be mailed!). And there's more CSA info in the FAQs.
